The Jersey City Schools
Honors Ruby Bridges Day
Ocean Avenue, this performance had an impact on all who
were involved, as well as the spectators in the audience, and
on the sidewalk!
PS #20 student actor, Julian Simo, stated, “I want the
students and families to know that Ruby Bridges was a brave
girl who helped make schools
fair for everyone. If not for her, I would not know most of the
people I go to school with today. She didn’t let fear stop her,
even when people were unfair and unkind. Ruby’s story
showed me how important it is to stand up for what’s right.
It made me think about how I can stand up for what's right,
too. Ruby Bridges is an inspiration.”
On November 14th, 2025 students throughout the United
States gathered to commemorate Ruby Bridge’s courageous
walk into the William Frantz Elementary School in New
Orleans, Louisiana 65 years earlier. This pride-filled day was
honored by The Jersey City Public School District and many
of our 27,000 students participated in Ruby Bridges Walk to
School Day activities, signifying the importance of Ruby’s
steps toward social justice.
The Students of Dr. Maya Angelou school, PS #20, gave a
riveting performance of Ruby’s entry into Frantz Elementary
school. Featuring an interactive walk into the building from

Amora Sessoms, who portrayed Ruby in the production,
discussed her involvement with the performance, “The
biggest lesson I learned from the Ruby Bridges story is that
being brave can help change the world. Ruby was just a kid,
like me, but she stood up for what was right even when she
was scared. She was brave and never gave up. I learned that
doing the right thing isn’t always easy, and that one person
can make a big difference in the world.
Finally, PS #20’s Kian Nyamgha’s insights leave us with no
reservation in understanding that Ruby Bridges’s strength
lends itself to the greater picture, and encourages us all to
focus on creating a more just world.
